Harry Kane stated that he is “hungry to prove people wrong” after the England captain scored two goals on his 100th cap to help his side secure a 2-0 win against Finland.
England had dominated possession but struggled to convert their chances, with Kane twice being denied by Finland’s keeper Lukas Hradecky and seeing one effort ruled out for offside.
However, he finally broke the deadlock with his 67th international goal in the 57th minute. Kane, 31, latched onto a smart pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold before unleashing a superb shot high into the net.
His landmark night got even sweeter 14 minutes later when debutant Noni Madueke teed him up for another clinical finish, sealing the win in style.
“It was a big night for me, really proud,” Kane said to ITV Sport. “I want to score goals and help the team. Whenever you are doubted, it makes you more hungry to prove people wrong. I always back myself to score goals and I am excited for the future.
“We always looked like the team who would break the deadlock. We spoke about being ruthless but in these games you have to keep knocking on the door and you will get your reward.”
England’s win, their second under interim manager Lee Carsley following Saturday’s victory against the Republic of Ireland, moves them level on points with Greece at the top of Nations League group League B Group 2.
Speaking post-match, Carsley praised Kane for his performance, highlighting his commitment to the national team.
“First of all it’s brilliant he (Kane) has got 100 caps tonight, then to score two goals, and the way he took the goals was outstanding,” Carsley added.
“It’s not surprising, to see him in the short space of time I’ve worked with him, the standards he’s got, the level he produces every day on and off the pitch. Hopefully he gets all the plaudits tonight, having performed this camp the way he’s performed. He looks very motivated to keep doing it as well.”
