Georgia Cornerback Daniel Harris was arrested on misdemeanor reckless driving and four other charges late Thursday night, adding to the litany of driving-related arrests in the football program.
Harris, a sophomore, has been a reserve who shared time off the bench at cornerback. The details of what led to his arrest were not known as of Friday afternoon, but he posted bail at $50, or $10 per charge. Athens-Clarke County Police charged Harris with reckless driving, operation of an unregistered vehicle without a license plate, no proof of insurance, use of safety belts and affixing materials that reduce the visibility of windows/windshield.
There was no immediate word on whether Harris would make the trip with the team for its game at Kentucky on Saturday. The Bulldogs were due to leave Friday afternoon.
This is the eighth known arrest of a Georgia player (currently on the team at the time of arrest) on a driving-related arrest since Jan. 2023, when player Devin Willock and staffer Chandler LeCroy died in a crash. (LeCroy was found to be over the legal drinking limit and street racing with former player Jalen Carter.)
Georgia suspended starting tailback Trevor Etienne for its opener after a DUI arrest in March. The team dismissed reserve defensive back David Daniel-Sisavanh over the summer for a violation of team rules, which included a reckless driving arrest from earlier in the year.
Coach Kirby Smart confirmed in July players arrested are also having NIL funds withheld by the team’s collective, among other measures they’ve taken.
“If people go say, ‘Well, it falls on deaf ears, you got to have discipline, you’ve got to discipline someone.’ Well, we have, and we will continue to do so,” Smart said. “If the actions require that, we’ll do what’s necessary to do that. But I do think the effective way in curtailing some things is when you go to their wallet and you find them because these fines have been substantial, and it’ll make you think twice about the mistakes you make.”
