Paris Saint-Germain have offered their “full support” to defender Nuno Mendes after the defender was racially abused online.
The 22-year-old was subjected to comments on social media after he conceded a penalty in PSG’s Ligue 1 victory at home to Brest on Saturday.
The Portugal international was penalised in the 29th minute after felling Ludovic Ajorque, with Romain del Castillo converting from the spot to give the visitors the lead at the Parc des Princes.
Luis Enrique’s side recovered to win 3-1 as Ousmane Dembele scored twice and Fabian Ruiz found the net to make it four league wins from four at the start of the season.
“Paris St-Germain doesn’t tolerate racism, antisemitism or any other form of discrimination,” PSG said in a statement on Sunday.
“The racial insults directed at Nuno Mendes are totally unacceptable.
“We stand firmly by Nuno and all those affected and we are working with the relevant authorities and associations to ensure those responsible are held accountable for their actions.
“At Paris St-Germain, we are committed to fostering an environment of inclusion, respect and unity both on and off the pitch. Racism has no place in football and we will continue to uphold the values of tolerance and respect that define our club.”
Mendes joined PSG from Sporting CP in 2021, initially on a loan deal, and has scored three goals in 85 first-team appearances.
PSG play La Liga side Girona in the Champions League on Wednesday before returning to Ligue 1 action on Saturday to play Reims.
