Fabian Hurzeler backs Brighton's Evan Ferguson ahead of Wolves clash: 'I already know his potential'

Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Fabian Hurzeler says Evan Ferguson has nothing to prove to him.

Ferguson is in line for his first start since March in Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup third round tie at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 19-year-old Republic of Ireland striker made his first appearance of the season as a late substitute in Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Ipswich Town after ankle damage which ruled him out from April and required surgery.

“He doesn’t have to show me what he can do, because I already know his potential,” Hurzeler said. “I’ve seen a lot of games in the past for Brighton.

“He is a great finisher in the box. He has the whole package for a striker, so for me it’s important that he integrates in our style of play, that he follows our principles.

“He doesn’t have to prove anything to me. He should do his work on the pitch, in possession, out of possession. He should help the team and then he will have a great impact on our game for sure.”

Summer signing Mats Wieffer, sidelined by a recurrence of thigh trouble since the 3-0 win at Everton on the opening day of the season, is available for a potential home debut, but fellow newcomer Brajan Gruda is still recovering from injury.
