Panthers receive Bryce Young trade inquiries days after benching: Sources

In the days since 2023 No. 1 pick Bryce Young was demoted from starter, the Carolina Panthers have received trade inquiries from multiple interested teams, a league source confirmed. ESPN was first to report the news.

The interest in Young comes days after Panthers coach Dave Canales said the team is not “really considering” trading Young, despite giving Andy Dalton the starting nod for Sunday’s game with the Las Vegas Raiders. On Wednesday, Canales said he “absolutely” believes Young still has the chance to be a franchise quarterback.

Through 18 career games, Young has struggled immensely and the decision to start Dalton was made after the Panthers fell to 0-2. Young has thrown for 245 yards with zero touchdowns and three interceptions this season while completing 55.4 percent of his passes. His passer rating of 44.1 would rank as the league’s lowest since Ryan Leaf in 1998 if sustained over a full season.

Dalton has been with Carolina since 2023. The three-time Pro Bowler appeared in one game last season, starting Week 3 in place of an injured Young. Dalton passed for 361 yards and two touchdowns on 58 attempts in a loss.

The most recent quarterback to be traded by the team that drafted them No. 1 was Baker Mayfield, who was traded to the Panthers in 2022 for a conditional fifth-round pick after Mayfield had started 59 games with the Cleveland Browns.

Sam Bradford, the No. 1 pick in 2010, was traded away by the St. Louis Rams after 49 starts, but his limited play was due to injury. Bradford was traded along with a fifth-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for Nick Foles, a fourth-round pick and a second-round pick.

JaMarcus Russell, the No. 1 pick in 2007, lasted 31 games and 25 starts with the Oakland Raiders before his permanent benching in 2009 and subsequent release in 2010.

If Young is dealt, he would join a crop of recent first-round quarterbacks to be dealt away on their rookie contracts, including Kenny Pickett, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, Justin Fields and Mac Jones since the 2021 draft.
