College football Week 5 odds, schedule: Georgia opens as a small favorite against Alabama

The first four weeks of the season have been mostly preseason for a number of top college football teams, but Week 5 delivers one of the most anticipated matchups of the season. Alabama hosts Georgia, and the Bulldogs started the week as a small favorite ahead of the primetime showdown in Tuscaloosa.

This is a rare regular-season meeting for two of the premier programs in the sport. Six of the last eight times these teams have met, it has either been an SEC Championship Game or a national title game. Alabama has won eight of the past nine games in this series. Georgia has been dominant against everyone else in the last few years, but the Bulldogs’ last two losses (and three of their last four dating back to the 2020 season) have come at the hands of the Crimson Tide.

There are three other top-25 matchups on the Week 5 schedule, although none are close to the same level of hype as Georgia at Alabama. Perhaps the most intriguing of that group is No. 19 Illinois at No. 9 Penn State in a meeting of undefeated teams. Illinois was impressive in an overtime win at Nebraska last Friday. Heading to Happy Valley is a big step up in competition for the Illini and the Nittany Lions are three-score favorites.

Elsewhere, No. 15 Louisville takes its undefeated record on the road to take on No. 16 Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish are likely in must-win mode after already losing to Northern Illinois. Notre Dame is favored by less than a touchdown.

The other top 25 matchup lost a lot of luster from how it appeared before Saturday. No. 20 Oklahoma State heads to No. 23 Kansas State after both lost in convincing fashion last week. The Cowboys were locked down by Utah’s defense in Stillwater, and the Wildcats had a night to forget at BYU. The Wildcats are favored at home in what could be an elimination game in the Big 12 race.

Here are the odds and schedule for every game featuring an AP Top 25 team, plus a few other notable games in Week 5. Two top-25 teams are on bye this week: No. 5 Tennessee and No. 11 Missouri.
