The first domino of the WNBA is offseason is here, and it’s a stunning one out of Los Angeles.
The Sparks mutually parted ways with Curt Miller, who had been the head coach of the franchise for the past two seasons, the team announced Tuesday. Miller had ostensibly been brought in to preside over a rebuild as the organization was fairly bereft of assets and talent after a disastrous general managerial stretch under Derek Fisher. Instead, Miller will not see out the next era in L.A.
This was Miller’s second head coaching job in the WNBA. After helming the Connecticut Sun for seven years and getting the Sun to the postseason in the last six, Miller brought instant credibility to the Sparks when he made the move in 2023. However, L.A. suffered an injury-riddled season in his first year and missed the playoffs by one game.
2024 was more of the same on the injury front, and the Sparks cratered to their worst record in franchise history. Miller leaves with a 25-55 mark through two seasons.
“I am proud of the culture created in our locker room and strongly believe the roots have been established for a bright future,” Miller said in the team’s press release. “The team is now positioned for success, and I wish the players the best heading into the 2025 season.”
