Atletico Madrid's Robin Le Normand suffers traumatic brain injury after head collision

Atletico Madrid defender Robin Le Norman suffered a traumatic brain injury following a collision of heads in Sunday’s Madrid derby.

The Spain international was involved in the accidental collision with Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni late in stoppage time during the 1-1 draw and received medical attention on the pitch.

The 27-year-old, a summer signing at Atletico from Real Sociedad, subsequently underwent tests that determined he had suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) with subdural haematoma.

An Atletico statement on Tuesday read: “In the process of our player returning to action, the guidelines set out in the protocol established for this type of trauma will be followed.”

Subdural hematoma is when blood collects between the skull and surface of the brain. It is usually caused by a severe head injury.

The United Kingdom’s National Health Service (NHS) describes subdural hematoma as: “Blood escapes from the blood vessel, leading to the formation of a blood clot (haematoma) that places pressure on the brain and damages it.

“Head injuries that cause subdural haematomas are often severe, such as those from a car crash, fall or violent assault. But minor bumps to the head can also lead to a subdural haematoma in a few cases.”

Atletico travel to Benfica in the Champions League on Wednesday night and return to La Liga action on October 6 with an away match at Real Sociedad.
