Assistant referee Rob Smith was discharged from hospital on Wednesday after a medical incident at West Bromwich Albion’s Championship clash against Middlesbrough.
The incident, which occurred early in the first half of Tuesday night’s match at the Hawthorns, led to an eight-minute delay in the match and Smith was carried from the pitch on a stretcher.
After taking unwell at the match, Smith was taken to hospital and underwent tests, before being discharged on Wednesday morning.
“We would like to extend our thanks to both clubs, the paramedics at the Hawthorns and the staff at Manor Hospital in Walsall for their care of Rob,” read a statement from Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) — the body in charge of refereeing in England.
Tuesday’s match saw West Brom fans paid tribute to Mark Townsend, a fan of the club who passed away at the age of 57 after suffering a medical incident during Saturday’s match against Sheffield Wednesday.
Middlesbrough won the match 1-0 thanks to Hayden Hackney’s second half goal, a result which saw Michael Carrick’s side rise to sixth in the standings while West Brom stay third.
