Arsenal's Mikel Merino and Tottenham's Pedro Porro recalled to Spain squad

Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino and Tottenham Hotspur full-back Pedro Porro are among the players to be recalled to Spain’s squad for October’s Nations League fixtures.

Merino, 28, and Porro, 25, were absent from the September squad as Spain drew 0-0 against Serbia before winning 4-1 at Switzerland.

Merino had been sidelined with a shoulder injury since joining Arsenal from Real Sociedad this summer but made his debut for Mikel Arteta’s side as a second-half substitute in Tuesday’s Champions League victory over Paris Saint-Germain.

Porro has only been capped three times by the senior side and the former Sporting Lisbon player was not named in the European Championship squad earlier this year. His last appearance came in Spain’s 1-0 loss against Colombia in March.

Among those to miss out on selection, though, is Atletico Madrid central defender Robin Le Normand, who suffered a traumatic brain injury following a collision of heads in last week’s Madrid derby. The 27-year-old subsequently underwent tests that determined he had suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) with subdural haematoma.

Porto striker Samu Omorodion is also not included despite scoring seven goals in six games, including two against Manchester United on Thursday, for his new side after joining from Alaves in the summer.

Spain captain and AC Milan striker Alvaro Morata is also back in the squad, as are Villarreal midfielder Alex Baena and Real Sociedad forward Mikel Oyarzabal, who scored the winning goal in the Euro 2024 final against England.

Spain host Denmark in Murcia on October 12 before playing Serbia in Cordoba three days later.
