Jabrill Peppers, a star safety for the New England Patriots who was voted a team captain this season, was arrested Saturday morning and is expected to be charged with assault and battery, strangulation and drug possession.

Braintree (Mass.) police responded to a call at a residence regarding a dispute between two people. According to the police report, a victim was treated by EMS at the scene. Peppers will be charged with assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, strangulation, and possession of a Class “B” substance believed to be cocaine, per the report.

Peppers is scheduled to be arraigned in court Monday.

“We are aware of an incident involving Jabrill Peppers over the weekend in which the police are currently investigating,” the Patriots said in a statement. “We will have no further comment at this time.”

In an interview Monday morning on Boston radio station WEEI, Patriots coach Jerod Mayo said he was in communication with Peppers.

“He called me that morning,” Mayo said. “I knew what was going on. We informed the NFL of what was going on. We’re still gathering information.”

On Saturday afternoon, the team ruled out Peppers for Sunday’s game after Friday terming him questionable to play due to a shoulder injury.

The Patriots signed Peppers to a three-year, $24 million extension in August.
