Newcastle trigger extension in Dan Burn's contract beyond 2024-25 Season

Newcastle United have triggered an extension in Dan Burn’s contract, meaning the defender will remain on Tyneside beyond the end of the season.

In October 2023, the 32-year-old signed a contract through until the end of 2024-25 campaign, but it contained an option to extend by at least another season.

Since joining his boyhood club from Brighton & Hove Albion for £13million ($16.9m) in January 2022 during the first post-takeover window, Burn has become a stalwart of Eddie Howe’s side.

Having helped save Newcastle from relegation as a centre-half, he predominantly played as a left-back during the 2022-23 campaign, guiding his club to a fourth-placed finish and Champions League qualification, as well as to the Carabao Cup final. Burn scored against Paris Saint-Germain during the famous 4-1 victory over the French side at St James’ Park last year.

Since Sven Botman’s anterior cruciate knee ligament injury in March, Burn has returned to playing at centre-back and has excelled, forming a strong partnership with Fabian Schar.

Burn has made 112 appearances for Newcastle and is part of the club’s player leadership team as a vice-captain.

He is set to play against his former side, Brighton, at St James’ Park in the Premier League tomorrow.
