Danny Welbeck aiming for quick return after sustaining back injury in Brighton's win over Newcastle

Brighton & Hove Albion forward Danny Welbeck says he “should be back in training soon” after sustaining a back injury in his side’s 1-0 win over Newcastle United.

The 33-year-old was taken off on a stretcher late on in Brighton’s victory at St James’ Park on Saturday.

Welbeck appeared to take a knock to the lower back in an aerial challenge with Newcastle defender Fabian Schar.

He was taken from the field for further medical assessment before the club’s social media account later revealed he was “a bit bruised and battered” but was able to travel back to the south coast with team-mates.

Welbeck has since confirmed on social media that following further scans and checks on Sunday, he is hopeful of a swift return to action.

“Still a bit sore, but after some extra checks and a scan today, I’m pleased to say I should be back in training soon, hopefully this week,” Welbeck said.

“Thanks to our medical staff and Newcastle Royal Infirmary A&E for their care and professionalism. Also to the boys for waiting for me to get home!”

Welbeck has made 134 appearances for Brighton since joining from Watford on a free transfer in 2020.

He has become a key player for successive managers at the Amex Stadium and made 37 appearances in all competitions under Roberto De Zerbi last season, scoring seven goals.

The former Manchester United striker is Brighton’s top scorer this term, with his winning goal at Newcastle a fifth of the campaign.
