Denmark have appointed former Brentford assistant Brian Riemer as their new men’s head coach.
Riemer has signed a contract with Denmark through to the 2026 World Cup.
The 46-year-old previously worked as an assistant to compatriot Thomas Frank at Brentford when he stepped up as head coach in October 2018.
Riemer left Brentford in the autumn of 2022 to take charge at Anderlecht. The Belgian side came 11th in the 2022-23 regular season before bouncing back with a second-place finish in the regular season last term, finishing third after the Championship round.
Riemer was sacked by Anderlecht in September with the team in fourth place due to “insufficient” performance.
Denmark have been without a head coach since Kasper Hjulmand stepped down after the team were knocked out of the European Championship by hosts Germany in the last 16 in the summer.
Morten Wieghorst was initially appointed as interim head coach but stepped aside due to “minor stress symptoms”. Lars Knudsen then took interim charge of the team for their Nations League matches in September and earlier this month, overseeing two wins, a draw and a defeat. The pair will remain with the national team and join Reimer’s coaching staff as assistants.
Denmark are second in Nations League A Group 4 after those results and face Spain at home and Serbia away in next month’s fixtures.
Denmark have qualified for the last two World Cups, reaching the last 16 in Russia in 2018 and failing to get out of the group in Qatar four years later.
