Newcastle's Kieran Trippier set miss at least Brighton match with muscular injury

Kieran Trippier is set to miss Newcastle United’s Premier League match against Brighton & Hove Albion and is a doubt for their remaining October fixtures.

The 34-year-old was forced off in the 71st minute of Newcastle’s 0-0 draw at Everton last weekend with an unspecified muscular issue.

He is still being assessed by the club’s medical staff, having suffered a hamstring problem, although the hope is that it is not a serious injury. However, with five matches between the October and November international breaks, there is a chance he will not play again until next month.

While Trippier is almost certain to miss the home fixture against Brighton on Saturday, October 19, he is also a significant doubt for the trip to Chelsea the following weekend and the Carabao Cup last-16 tie with the same opponents.

With the exact prognosis still unclear, his availability for Arsenal’s visit to St James’ Park on November 2 and the away game at Nottingham Forest on November 10 is still to be determined.

But, having being sidelined for eight matches between March and May last season with a groin problem, Newcastle will not want to take any risks on their vice-captain, especially given Tino Livramento is a ready-made replacement.

Livramento, who was belatedly called into the England squad for this international break but is still yet to make his senior bow, actually began the campaign as first-choice right-back, starting the opening four league games. However, Trippier has been in the starting XI for the last three and remains a valuable member of the side, especially in an attacking sense.

Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson are on course to return to the squad against Brighton, with Lewis Miley, the 18-year-old midfielder who has yet to play this season, also set to be back in the selection fold in the coming weeks, which represents more positive news for Eddie Howe.
