Bruno Fernandes keen to rediscover goalscoring form for Manchester United

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes says he takes responsibility for his recent lack of goals and is determined to get back to his best form as quickly as possible.

The 30-year-old midfielder has gone 15 club games without finding the back of the net for United, a run that stretches back to April.

Speaking ahead of Portugal’s Nations League match against Poland on Saturday, Fernandes acknowledged he hasn’t lived up to his own standards.

“As for the club, I want to improve as soon as I get there, and make sure the goals start coming again,” Fernandes said, as quoted by Reuters.

“I have to take responsibility for that too because I’m a midfielder who scores a lot of goals, and over the years, I’ve always been at a very high level in terms of goals, and I have to live up to that, with those expectations.”

Despite United’s struggles in front of goal this season — they have scored just five times in the Premier League, the joint second-worst tally in the division — Fernandes remains focused on turning things around, both personally and for the team.

“I also have my own standards, I don’t hold back on that,” he added. “I haven’t scored for the club yet and I hope that as soon as I get there, I can score and help the club get back to winning ways and to a good level.”

Fernandes’ record at United has been impressive since joining in 2020, with 79 goals and 70 assists in 244 appearances. However, he has yet to get off the mark this season, as United find themselves in 14th place with just eight points from their opening seven matches — their worst start in the Premier League era.

United will look to improve their fortunes when they host Brentford on October 19.
