Lions, David Montgomery agree to 2-year contract extension: Why Detroit made the move

The Detroit Lions and running back David Montgomery agreed to terms on a two-year extension, the team announced Saturday. The deal is worth $18.25 million with $10.5 million guaranteed, according to multiple reports.

Montgomery, 27, rushed for 1,286 yards and 17 touchdowns through the first 18 games of his Lions tenure.

Montgomery is one of the most important cogs in this Detroit operation. Initially signed ahead of the 2023 season, Montgomery has proven to be everything the Lions thought they were getting and more. He’s excellent between the tackles, with vision to make the right read time after time behind one of the most diverse run schemes in the NFL.

Montgomery is almost automatic inside the 5-yard line and he’s got more wiggle than one would think for a bigger back, too. Whenever the Detroit offense strays too far away from its identity, coach Dan Campbell and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson turn to Montgomery to get things back on track. It’s no surprise the team wanted to keep him around.

The Chicago Bears drafted Montgomery in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, where Montgomery spent the first four seasons of his NFL career before signing with the Lions. He racked up 3,609 rushing yards, 26 rushing touchdowns, 1,240 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns during his time in Chicago.

Detroit is 3-1 this season and second in the NFC North behind the undefeated Minnesota Vikings.
