Kansas City Current forward Temwa Chawinga sets NWSL single-season scoring record

Kansas City Current forward Temwa Chawinga claimed the NWSL single-season scoring record with a goal against Bay FC on Saturday night.

The score marked Chawinga’s 19th goal this year, passing former Chicago Red Stars forward Sam Kerr’s previous record of 18 set during the 2019 season.

Chawinga’s record-breaking goal came in the 35th minute on a laser strike from outside the box, with so much power the ball was still rolling back out of the goal while the Current players swarmed Chawinga in celebration.

It should be noted Kerr set her record during a shorter NWSL season, but that does nothing to diminish Chawinga’s new record as she has been a goal-scoring machine with Kansas City this year. She scored against 12 of the opposing 13 teams, needing only a goal against the San Diego Wave to complete the full set in a single season. She will get that opportunity next week at home, when the Wave visit CPKC Stadium.

Chawinga tied Kerr’s record last week against Racing Louisville FC, needing only two minutes to score in that match — also on the road — and provide the Current with their game-winning goal.

Chawinga is firmly in control of the 2024 Golden Boot award with those 19 goals, now six ahead of Orlando Pride forward Barbra Banda.

The Current also clinched a home quarterfinal Saturday, their first playoff match that will be hosted at CPKC Stadium, which opened earlier this year. It will also serve as the site of the NWSL Championship to conclude the 2024 season.
