Brighton to wait on scan after Danny Welbeck injured, leaves Newcastle game on stretcher

Brighton & Hove Albion will await the results of a scan after Danny Welbeck was taken off on a stretcher with what appeared to be a back injury during the win over Newcastle United.

Welbeck, 33, appeared to take a knee to his lower back in an aerial challenge with Newcastle defender Fabian Schar late in the second half at St James’ Park.

He was attended to by medical staff on the pitch before being taken from the field for further assessment.

Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler said he had yet to talk with Welbeck when speaking to the media in his press conference and hoped to get further information in the coming hours.

“I can’t give any updates yet,” Hurzeler said after the game. “He will have a scan and hopefully we will know more later.

“I think he got an opponent’s knee in the back. Hopefully it’s not that bad, but we can’t be sure about that.”

Welbeck opened the scoring for Brighton in the 35th minute with a well-taken finish, which ultimately was the game’s only goal.

The strike was a fifth in the Premier League this season for Welbeck. No other Brighton player has more than two.

Hurzeler, though, pointed to the other qualities the former England international brings to his team.

“I know he is judged on goals,” he added, “but for me it’s more about how we works for the team and how he counter presses is absolutely impressive.”
