Boulder (Colo.) Police on Thursday arrested a man suspected of being involved in a series of hit-and-run crashes before driving his truck onto Colorado’s Folsom Field.
The police received a call at 6:45 p.m. local time from witnesses about a man in a blue pickup truck allegedly involved in at least two hit-and-run crashes and striking several trees and signs, Boulder Police said in a statement. The witnesses tried to stop the driver from leaving the scene and one person was nearly struck by the pickup truck, police said. The driver allegedly hit another car and more trees while driving, and he eluded the police’s attempt to stop him, according to the statement.
CU Boulder Police spotted the driver minutes later and unsuccessfully tried to stop him before he rammed a gate at Folsom Field and drove onto the football field. The driver eventually surrendered to police, per Boulder Police.
Police identified the driver as Karl Haglund, 48, of Massachusetts. He was booked into the Boulder County jail on multiple charges: criminal attempt vehicular assault, reckless endangerment, vehicular eluding, leaving the scene of a crash after damage (three counts), failure to obey a traffic control device, driving without insurance, criminal mischief, obstruction of a peace officer and trespassing.
“We appreciate the work of CU Boulder Police and Boulder Police Department for resolving this situation quickly and safely,” Colorado’s athletic department said in a statement.
Colorado plays Saturday on the road against in-state rival Colorado State at Canvas Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
