Anthony Gordon has signed a new long-term contract at Newcastle United.
The Athletic revealed in August Newcastle were set to open talks with Gordon and reported in September they were close to securing the 23-year-old’s future, with his new deal following the significant development to his game over the last 18 months.
The contract is seen to better reflect Gordon’s true value and is expected to make him one of the club’s highest-earning players.

“I’m very happy here, I like living here, the team is very suited to me — and I’m here to win a trophy. The short story is we need to win a trophy. Winning a trophy here would be unbelievable because the fans have waited so long. To be part of that team who finally does it is a massive goal of mine.”
Gordon experienced a complicated summer after Newcastle opened discussions with Liverpool over a potential last-resort deal for the winger if they could not solve their own issues with complying with the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR).
Though they solved that problem by selling Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion respectively, Gordon would have been open to the prospect of moving to the club he grew up supporting.
Gordon’s new contract subsequently became a priority — for Newcastle, there was a desire to both retain their key attacking talent and reaffirm their commitment to the player.
“I’m delighted Anthony has committed his future to the club,” head coach Howe added. “He has grown as a player and as a person during his time at Newcastle United and he has continued to prove just how good he is on the biggest stage.
“He is dedicated to improving himself and the team, and when you add that to the quality of his performances and his incredibly high work-rate, it’s clear to see why he has such a special connection with our supporters.”
Gordon joined Newcastle from Everton in January 2023 for an initial fee of £40million ($51.8m). He has provided 15 goals and 11 assists in 74 appearances since his move to St James’ Park.
A member of England’s European Under-21 Championship-winning team in the summer of 2023, he made his senior debut in March 2024 and was part of England’s Euro 2024 squad.
Gordon has made eight Premier League appearances this season, scoring twice.

Gordon contract extension sends important message
As Newcastle dashed to comply with PSR in late June, Gordon was briefly the subject of discussions with Liverpool, the forward’s boyhood club.
While those talks ultimately came to nothing, the concern at Newcastle was that Gordon’s head had been turned and that uncertainty would ripple through the dressing-room. It was a summer of uncertainty which brought upheaval at boardroom level and discomfort for Eddie Howe.
This contract extension and the message it sends is important. With Newcastle failing to strengthen their first-team for successive transfer windows – hello again, PSR — it offers a counterpoint, that the club remains ambitious and that players can progress at St James’ Park.
Last season was challenging and Gordon was Newcastle’s most influential and reliable player. Keeping the tone-setter sets a different kind of tone.
