Arsenal are waiting to discover the extent of the apparent injuries sustained by Gabriel and Jurrien Timber during Sunday’s 2-2 home draw with Liverpool.

Gabriel, 26, went down with the injury in the 50th minute and received treatment on the pitch.

The Brazilian walked off before coming back on but then went down again three minutes later and was replaced by Jakub Kiwior, before heading down the tunnel.

Timber went down in the 72nd minute before also attempting to continue. The 23-year-old only lasted four minutes before going down again, with Myles Lewis-Skelly replacing him.

“I don’t know but he could not run,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said when asked about Gabriel’s injury. “I don’t know what happened, if it was the knee joint or ankle. They are assessing him right now.”

Timber had been an injury doubt before the match, having missed Arsenal’s last three games, and Arteta said on the Dutchman: “We’ve done everything we could to accelerate the process. He was so willing.

“The medical staff did amazing work. I don’t know the extent of the injury, if there is one. The same with big Gabi.”

Having also been an injury doubt going into the game, Bukayo Saka gave Arsenal the lead in the ninth minute with a ruthless near-post finish after being played in by Ben White. Virgil van Dijk equalised for Liverpool nine minutes later after he headed home a corner that had been flicked on by Luis Diaz.

Arsenal retook the lead just before the break, with Mikel Merino scoring his first goal for the club as he headed in a Declan Rice free kick.

Liverpool applied pressure for much of the second half and, following the injuries to Gabriel and Timber, Darwin Nunez laid the ball off to Mohamed Salah who finished first time past David Raya in the 81st minute.
