Francesco Totti confirms he is considering coming out of retirement

Former Roma forward Francesco Totti claims “one or two teams” are interested in signing him as he considers making a return to football.

Totti retired in 2017, aged 40, having spent his entire career at Roma, making 786 appearances for the Italian club.

Now 48, the ex-Italy international has confirmed he is considering coming out of retirement.

In an interview given to ESPN last week, Totti claimed more than one interested Serie A club had contacted him regarding the possibility of making a return to playing.

When asked to explain his comments during a recent appearance at the World Legends Padel Tour, Totti confirmed the interest, adding it would take “at least two months” for him to get back up to speed.

“I wasn’t joking. It was no joke,” he said.

“There’s a team. There are one or two teams. Let’s see what my mind tells me and, above all, my body.”

He added: “My mind’s already given me its answer.”

Totti made his debut as a 16-year-old in 1993 and went on to score 307 goals for Roma across all competitions.

After hanging up his boots in July 2017, Totti became a director at the club but held the role for only two years before stepping down.

He made 58 appearances at international level and was a part of the Italy squad that won the World Cup in 2006.

Roma are currently 11th in Serie A having taken 10 points from their opening nine games. Totti’s former team-mate Daniele de Rossi was sacked four games into the new campaign and replaced by Ivan Juric.
