UCF fired defensive coordinator Ted Roof on Monday after the Knights lost their fifth consecutive game and allowed more than 250 yards rushing for the second week in a row, a person briefed on the situation told The Athletic.
Roof was in his first season as defensive coordinator for Gus Malzahn at UCF. On3 first reported Roof was being replaced by co-defensive coordinator and assistant head coach Addison Williams.
The 60-year-old Roof is a 35-year veteran assistant coach and longtime defensive coordinator, with stops at Duke, Georgia Tech, Minnesota, Penn State and Oklahoma. As head coach at Duke from the tail end of the 2003 season through 2007, Roof was 6-45.
The Knights (3-5, 1-4 Big 12) are in danger of missing a bowl game in their second season in the Big 12 after losing 37-24 at home on Saturday to No. 9 BYU. The Cougars ran for 252 yards and averaged 6.4 yards per play. The week before, UCF blew a fourth-quarter lead at No. 11 Iowa State, allowing 256 yards rushing and and 530 overall in a 38-35 loss.
