West Virginia has fired defensive coordinator Jordan Lesley and will hand the role to linebackers coach Jeff Koonz, a person involved in the decision told The Athletic.
The Mountaineers are 4-4 coming off a 31-26 victory at Arizona, but they head into their second idle week of the season ranked 13th in the Big 12 in yards per play and fielding one of the worst pass defenses in the country. Lesley was in his fourth season as defensive coordinator and has been a member of head coach Neal Brown’s staff since Brown took over in 2019. Koonz is in his fifth year on staff as linebackers coach and special teams coordinator.
The Mountaineers finish the season with games against Cincinnati, Baylor, UCF and Texas Tech, looking to post consecutive winning seasons under Brown for the first time.
