Gabriel injury 'doesn't look bad at all', Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta reveals

Mikel Arteta has offered a positive update on Gabriel and indicated the Arsenal defender has avoided serious injury.

The central defender went down during the second half of Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool having appeared to sustain a left leg injury.

He initially received treatment on the pitch before walking to the sideline and then attempting to play on, only to go down again a few minutes later. The defender was then replaced by Jakub Kiwior.

Arteta could not provide much clarity when asked about the Brazil international’s injury after the match but said on Tuesday that signs were positive.

“We are still assessing him,” he said ahead of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie with Preston North End. “It doesn’t look bad at all.”

Jurrien Timber also appeared to suffer an injury in the second half and had to be withdrawn.

The Dutchman had missed Arsenal’s previous three games with another issue but Arteta played down any talk of any setback.

“Jurrien is fine,” he added. “He could not continue the game but there is no new injury there at all.”

Bukayo Saka was fit to return for Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday and scored the opening goal, but the hosts were still without captain Martin Odegaard and defender Riccardo Calafiori. William Saliba was suspended for the game but will be able to return if required at Deepdale.
