Fantasy football Week 9 takeaways: Saquon Barkley is a superhero, Caleb Williams is not progressing and more

How do you throw four passes to Brian Thomas Jr. in a game that you were chasing on the scoreboard from the beginning. Trevor Lawrence is “Check-Down Charlie.” And then, with a chance to win the game, he throws a fade to a running back instead of to Thomas — interception, game over.

Saquon Barkley is like a superhero out there every week. He  literally jumped over a defender backwards. The Giants must be sick.

Caleb Williams was bad. No rhythm in the passing game. You rarely see him take a three- or five-step drop, plant and throw. He’s not progressing.

The Cardinals dominated with the running game. James Conner’s success rate was off the charts. So there was no need really for the passing game, as that’s the Bears’ strength (they are terrible against the run).

Jordan Love looks like he learned from Brett Favre, not Aaron Rodgers. He is often careless with the ball. He needed big plays and only had one of 20-plus yards.

Jared Goff just has no passing volume. Now all of his games until around Christmas are indoors and you would think the Lions defense will struggle without Aidan Hutchinson. Their play counts are bad due to defensive and special-teams touchdowns. Goff is not a certain starter in our game, even with 14 TDs in eight games.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba had the breakout game people wanted, though it was probably on your bench (he was started in less than half of Yahoo leagues) and DK Metcalf is expected back next game.

Kyren Williams’ TD streak ended at 10. He had chances in close but could not convert.

The Commanders defense is no longer anything to pick on. This kind of thing happens all the time.

The most impressive stat about Jayden Daniels in Week 9 was no sacks vs. a Giants defense that generates the most pressure in the league.

Watching the game, there was fear that Dak Prescott’s injury was a broken throwing hand. But they said it was a hamstring. He’s not a runner, so he can probably get back quickly, though expect him to officially be designated week-to-week.

I thought Rico Dowdle (107 total yards, five catches) was really good and is now the perfect zeroRB. But that’s only if Dak Prescott doesn’t miss significant time. I feel like I’m the only guy defending Dowdle in the fantasy space. Since Week 1, he’s averaging 4.7 yards per carry and over four catches per game. The lack of rushing TDs is a fluke.

Darnell Mooney has been a top 10 WR. His full-season pace is 77/1110/9. Contracts in real life can matter, and again, the great thing here is that you didn’t have to pay anything to be right.

Tua Tagovailoa is no longer a big-play QB. He had one pass over 20 yards. Tyreek Hill is probably a late second-round pick now, at best, and Jaylen Waddle about 75th overall, in a hypothetical redraft. The hope for Waddle with Tua’s return has been dashed.

Hat tip to Tyler Bass for a 61-yard FG to win the game for Buffalo in the final seconds.

What if I told you Joe Burrow would throw five TD passes and Ja’Marr Chase would have 11 fantasy points. Just incredible.

The Raiders dominated garbage time so there is nothing actionable about their game.

J.K. Dobbins reasserted himself as the Chargers’ bell cow. And Justin Herbert was great. A lot of teams probably dropped Quentin Johnston (118 yards and a TD on five targets). His game is made for Herbert’s arm.

Jameis Winston crashed back to earth against a quality opponent. The Chargers are obsessed with stopping big plays. All teams should be but they aren’t.

I’m not going to dance on Nick Chubb’s grave. Maybe he bounces back this year. But it’s just injury modeling. You drop two levels with that injury when fully recovered. So he eventually goes from All-Pro to good? But he’s also old, so give me the under. I hope I’m wrong. It’s a sad story that we’ve seen a million times since back in the days of Gale Sayers. Here’s the deal: the week I say this and nobody mocks me in the comments for jumping the gun, I’ll drop this topic for the rest of the year.

I have little on Titans-Patriots. You like the 95 rushing yards by Drake Maye. Tony Pollard and Calvin Ridley are startable for the Titans.

Alvin Kamara was great again. His splits with and without Derek Carr are night and day. Chris Olave took a vicious hit and was taken away in an ambulance.

The Saints are a bad defense but I was somewhat encouraged by Bryce Young. Ja’Tavion Sanders again is a live option on waivers at TE — 87 yards on five targets.

Zay Flowers’ market share was crazy good. Diontae Johnson played but did nothing at all. Would I pick up Johnson on waivers now? Nope.

Courtland Sutton has back-to-back 100-yards games after the bagel at New Orleans. He had a TD pass to Bo Nix, who now regularly finds his way to 20 fantasy points.
