Matty Cash will miss Aston Villa’s Champions League trip to Belgian side Club Bruges on Wednesday.
Cash had to be withdrawn due to a calf injury following a foul by Cristian Romero in the second half of Villa’s 4-1 loss at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. Romero also had to go off after the challenge, for which he was booked.
Cash has not travelled to Belgium but is only expected to miss a week with the injury, meaning he may yet be called up to the Poland squad for their Nations League games against Portugal and Scotland later this month.
The 27-year-old missed six games earlier this season due to a hamstring issue.
Ezri Konsa predominantly filled in for Cash during that period, with the Englishman moving from centre-back to right-back and Diego Carlos taking his place alongside Pau Torres at the heart of Villa’s defence. Carlos came on for Cash against Spurs, while 20-year-old Lamare Bogarde and 18-year-old Kosta Nedeljkovic are other right-back options in Unai Emery’s squad.
Despite going off injured against Tottenham, Morgan Rogers has made the journey but fellow midfielder Ross Barkley is another absentee from the travelling party to face Club Bruges. Emery confirmed ahead of the Spurs match that the 30-year-old would miss that fixture and the trip to Belgium.
“They aren’t with us, Matty Cash and Ross Barkley, they both have small injuries,” Emery confirmed on Tuesday evening.
Following Wednesday’s game, Villa face a trip to Premier League leaders Liverpool on Saturday ahead of the international break.
