Los Angeles Lakers power forward Anthony Davis exited Sunday’s game against the Toronto Raptors with a left eye injury late in the third quarter and did not return to the contest.
It is the same eye that Davis suffered a left corneal abrasion in twice last season.
As Davis rotated over to block Jakob Poeltl’s dunk attempt, Poeltl’s left hand struck Davis in the face as Davis blocked the shot with his left hand. Davis fell and immediately grabbed his face, writhing in pain on the floor for a couple of minutes before being helped to the locker room by a group of Lakers staffers.
Davis finished the game with 22 points, four rebounds, three assists, one steal and two blocks in 26 minutes.
Last season, Davis exited two games early — on March 16 against the Golden State Warriors and on April 7 against the Minnesota Timberwolves — due to a left corneal abrasion. After consulting with eye doctors, Davis decided not to wear goggles, which he sported in his youth basketball career.
Davis entered Sunday’s game averaging 32.4 points, 11.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.4 steals and 2.0 blocks in 36.3 minutes per game.
