Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers handed first England call-up

Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers has received his first England call-up for the upcoming Nations League games against Greece and Republic of Ireland.

The 22-year-old was originally named in the under-21s squad but has now been promoted to the senior setup ahead of Thursday’s game in Greece.

Rogers has become an important part of Unai Emery’s Villa squad, playing every Premier League and Champions League game so far this season.

At international level, the former Middlesbrough midfielder has represented his country at every age group from under-15s through to under-21s.

In August, Emery questioned the decision to call Rogers up to the England Under-21 squad, arguing his impressive development meant that he did not gain much from playing youth football.

Rogers progressed through the West Bromwich Albion academy before joining City in 2019. He had loan spells at Lincoln City, Bournemouth and Blackpool before his permanent move to Middlesbrough in July 2023.

He spent six months at the Riverside before signing for Villa in a deal worth an initial £8million plus a further £7m in possible add-ons.

England are second in their Nations League group having taken nine points from their opening four games.

Thursday’s match against Greece will be interim head coach Lee Carsley’s penultimate game in charge before Thomas Tuchel officially takes the reins on January 1, 2025.
