A Premier League footballer accused of rape was questioned by police last week as the investigation into allegations against him continues.
The player, who is in his 30s, has been under investigation since his initial arrest on suspicion of rape in July 2022. He was taken into custody before being released on bail and was later released under investigation (RUI).
The player, who has not been suspended by his club and has been allowed to continue playing in the Premier League, cannot be named for legal reasons.
While the footballer was in police custody, he was further arrested on suspicion of two incidents of rape that were alleged to have been committed in April 2021 and June 2021 in relation to a different woman.
In February 2023, he was interviewed by police for a sexual offence alleged to have taken place in the same month regarding a third woman.
As part of the investigation into the alleged offences, he attended a police station last week (November 7) and was interviewed under caution.
A Met Police statement released to The Athletic read: “Met officers are investigating following a number of reports of alleged sexual offences between 2021 and 2023.
“A man in his 30s was arrested in July 2022. He has since been has been interviewed by police on two further occasions while under caution. The investigation remains ongoing and detectives are continuing with in-depth and detailed enquiries.
“Those who have come forward to police continue to receive support from Met officers.”
Police will be taking no further action regarding the alleged offence in June 2021 because the relevant legislation had not yet come into effect at the time it is said to have occurred.
The player remains under police investigation while enquiries are carried out.
