It’s the last week of the college football regular season, and the field of realistic contenders for the College Football Playoff has finally narrowed after a number of upsets on Saturday. This week’s headliner is Texas-Texas A&M, but there are several big games around the sport.
The Longhorns are favored in College Station for the biggest game in this rivalry in a long time. Not only is this the first time these in-state rivals have met since 2011, but it’s also a play-in game for the SEC Championship Game, even after Texas A&M somehow lost at Auburn in four overtimes. The winner plays Georgia in Atlanta next week. Texas is favored by six points as of Monday morning.
In recent years, Ohio State-Michigan has been the biggest game of the regular season in college football, but not this year. The 6-5 Wolverines have disappeared from the national conversation, while Ohio State is the current favorite to win the national title. The Buckeyes have lost the last three meetings in this series but are favored by a whopping three touchdowns.
Another massive rivalry that has lost some stakes this year is Alabama-Auburn. After losing at Oklahoma, which was shocking not only for the result but also for how it happened, with Alabama somehow only scoring three points, the Crimson Tide will need a slew of upsets to get into the CFP field. Meanwhile, 5-6 Auburn is fighting for bowl eligibility, even after that win against Texas A&M. Alabama is favored by double-digits at home.
While some of the high-profile rivalries might lack a bit of juice this year, a sneaky rivalry game could be Notre Dame at USC. The Fighting Irish are seeking a home game in the CFP, while USC hopes to kick its rivals out of the field. The Trojans just beat one rival, UCLA, to reach bowl eligibility and enter this game as a touchdown underdog. If you’re looking for possible chaos in the final week to shake up the 12-team field, this is a good place to start.
Elsewhere in the CFP race, Miami heads to 8-3 Syracuse as a 10.5-point favorite, and Tennessee is favored by 11.5 points at Vanderbilt. In a game that could be relevant in the CFP race if things get weird this week, Clemson is favored by 2.5 points against South Carolina in a top-20 matchup.
Of course, it’s not all about the College Football Playoff race. A dozen teams are looking for a sixth win and bowl eligibility in the final week of the regular season. There are already 77 bowl-eligible teams.
There is plenty of action to feast on this week. No teams in the AP Top 25 are on bye.
