Cristian Romero 'unlikely' to return for Tottenham against Fulham

Tottenham Hotspur are “unlikely” to have Cristian Romero available for Sunday’s Premier League home game against Fulham.

Romero, 26, has missed Tottenham’s last two matches with a foot injury he first sustained against Aston Villa earlier this month which then flared up again while on international duty with Argentina during the international break.

His injury has meant Spurs head coach Ange Postecoglou has been forced to opt for a centre-back partnership of Radu Dragusin and Ben Davies, with Romero’s first-choice partner Micky van de Ven also out with injury. The Dutchman is not expected to return until the middle of next month.

“Unlikely,” Postecoglou said on Friday when asked if any of his injured players could return against Fulham.

“Romero is closer and is probably the closest. But again, probably unlikely, I’m not ruling him out. He has got to get through a few things today and we have another session tomorrow.”

Spurs head into Sunday’s match having beaten reigning champions Manchester City 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium in their last league outing. On Thursday, they drew 1-1 with Roma in a Europa League league phase match.

Postecoglou’s side are also without first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, who will be out for months after having ankle surgery, forward Richarlison, winger Wilson Odobert and striker Mikey Moore with injuries. Midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur is suspended.
