Kylian Mbappe is a serious doubt for the Intercontinental Cup final due to a left thigh injury sustained during Real Madrid’s Champions League victory over Atalanta on Tuesday.
The 25-year-old opened the scoring for Madrid in the 10th minute of the 3-2 win in Bergamo after Brahim Diaz’s assisted pass played him through on goal.
However, the France international was substituted off nine minutes before the break.
Mbappe, who has scored 12 goals across all competitions for Carlo Ancelotti’s side this season, was able to walk off the pitch as he was replaced by Rodrygo.
The club now consider him a longshot for the game on December 18, which will be played against either Pachuca or Al Ahly at Lusail Stadium in Doha, Qatar.
A thigh injury that Mbappe sustained in September was expected to result in him missing around three weeks of action, but the Frenchman returned earlier than expected and faced Lille in the Champions League on October 2.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side, who are two points behind league leaders Barcelona, return to action on Saturday with a trip to Rayo Vallecano in La Liga before the Intercontinental Cup final.
Their final match of the calendar year will see them host Sevilla in the league on December 22.
