Christian Barmore, the New England Patriots star defensive tackle who returned to the field last month following a July diagnosis of blood clots, is dealing with recurring symptoms that require further evaluation, the team said in a statement Thursday.
As a result, the Patriots have placed Barmore on the reserve non-football illness list. With three games remaining and his health “our top priority,” the team said, Barmore’s 2024 season is likely over. It’s unclear exactly when the symptoms began reoccurring.

Doctors detected blood clots in Barmore in late July. He credited teammates and coaches with helping him stay positive through trying days in his recovery.
“Blood clots are not a joke,” Barmore said when he returned in mid-November. “I had real bad shortness of breath, and it messed with me like a lot. … My teammates really supported the hell out of me, and I love them all, and coaches and all. And I told myself I was not going to lose that battle. So I told myself, I’m going to keep fighting and keep going.”
Barmore, who signed a four-year, $84 million contract with $42 million guaranteed in April, played in the team’s last four games.
“We appreciate everything Christian did to return to the team this season, but our top priority is Christian’s health and wellbeing,” the Patriots said in a statement. “We know that he will continue to receive tremendous care and we want to ensure that he gets the time he needs to come back stronger than ever.”
