Brighton to make late call on Joao Pedro for Nottingham Forest clash

Brighton will make a late decision on the availability of Joao Pedro for Sunday’s Premier League home game against Nottingham Forest.

The forward, 22, has missed the last two matches with an injury sustained on international duty with Brazil.

He sat out Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Ipswich Town at the Amex Stadium and Wednesday’s 3-2 home win against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Head coach Fabian Hurzeler, speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday morning, said: “He will train today with the team and then we have to see how it goes.

“If he can train fully, do all the movements and, of course, we won’t take any risk.”

Joao Pedro has been Brighton’s main goal scorer, with 22 goals in 43 appearances across all competitions since a £30million move from Watford in June 2023.

Matts Wieffer, meanwhile, is in contention for his home league debut.

The midfielder, 24, returned as a second half substitute against Wolves from four matches out with a recurrence of thigh trouble.

James Milner, Matt O’Riley, Brajan Gruda and Solly March all remain sidelined by injuries, but Georginio Rutter returns to the squad.

The French forward was ineligible for the Wolves tie, having played previously in the Carabao Cup for former club Leeds United.

Brighton and Forest have both made unbeaten starts to their top-flight campaigns, each taking eight points from their opening four games.
