New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett is in line to start Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 4, coach Jerod Mayo said Monday, with 2024 No. 3 pick Drake Maye remaining as the backup.

“Right now, Jacoby is still our starting quarterback. … We have to support him,” Mayo said.

This is the second time Mayo has endorsed Brissett as the Patriots starter since removing him in the fourth quarter of Thursday night’s loss to the New York Jets. Brissett completed 12 of his 18 passes for only 98 yards in Week 3. Maye replaced Brissett with 4:24 left in the game. The Patriots offense only mustered 139 net yards on 48 plays against New York.

Following the game, Mayo told reporters that subbing Maye in was “a good opportunity for him to go out there with the ones and put a few drives together.”

Mayo was also asked if there was a possibility of a change at quarterback.

“I don’t know,” Mayo said. “We talk about it every single week. You’re competing for a job, so we’ll get together as a coaching staff and see where it goes.”

However, the day after the game he told members of the media that “Jacoby is the quarterback until I say he’s not the quarterback.”

Brissett began the offseason as QB1 and stayed there even with Mayo saying at one point said that Maye had outplayed Brissett. The veteran passer has started all three games with the Patriots going 1-2 this season. He’s completed 60.9 percent of his passes for 368 yards and a touchdown. Maye went 4-of-8 for 22 yards in the 16 snaps he played Thursday night.
