Injured Alexander Isak ruled out of Carabao Cup tie, will be assessed before Everton trip

Alexander Isak is out of Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup third-round tie with AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday and will be assessed before next weekend’s trip to Everton.

The 25-year-old suffered a broken toe during Newcastle’s 2-1 victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this month and played at Fulham following an injection.

However, he missed Newcastle’s 1-1 draw against Manchester City at St James’ Park on Saturday, with Anthony Gordon deployed as a striker. Gordon won Newcastle’s penalty and scored the resultant spot-kick to earn a point for the hosts.

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe is adamant Isak’s injury is not serious, but the Sweden international is being assessed on a daily basis.

“He definitely won’t feature on Tuesday. Let’s see how he looks for Everton,” Howe said about Isak.

“Obviously there’s an international break after that and there will be implications for that, so we’ll make assessments during the week. It’s not a serious injury but it is a niggly one which is affecting him.”

Kieran Trippier, meanwhile, will also be assessed this week after being forced off against Manchester City. While Sandro Tonali departed with cramp, Howe was unsure what Trippier’s ailment was, with the right-back indicating that he may have pulled a muscle.

“Sandro (Tonali) still has some fitness work to do, as he came off with cramp,” Howe said. “Kieran (Trippier) we hope is cramp as well. We’re not 100 per cent sure yet (on whether that is the case for Trippier).”
