Borussia Dortmund say United States winger Gio Reyna has suffered a setback in his bid to recover from a groin injury.
Reyna withdrew from his country’s roster for their September friendlies against Canada and New Zealand due to a strain in his left groin.
The 21-year-old sustained the injury during training with the USMNT, and it has since been confirmed by Dortmund that he is not expected to return until after the November international break.
Dortmund head coach Nuri Sahin stated that Reyna was set to remain on the sidelines, while it was also announced that forwards Karim Adeyemi and Julien Duranville won’t be available in the coming weeks.
“We expect that Juju and Karim will be available again after the international break in November. Unfortunately, Gio had a setback and it looks similar for him,” Sahin said.
Reyna started all three matches for the U.S. at this summer’s Copa America, where the team was eliminated in the group stage.
Since returning from a six-month loan at Nottingham Forest in the latter half of the 2023-24 season, Reyna has made only one substitute appearance for Dortmund this campaign.
New USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino, meanwhile, named his first roster for his side’s friendlies against Panama on October 12 in Austin, Texas, and Mexico on October 15 in Guadalajara.
Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Tim Weah have been included, while Tyler Adams (back) and Sergino Dest (ACL) remain out after surgeries.
