NC State quarterback Grayson McCall was carted off the field after taking a hard hit that knocked off his helmet during a game against Wake Forest on Saturday.
Inside the red zone, McCall was attempting to scramble for a first down on third-and-11 when three Wake Forest defenders tackled him simultaneously. He fumbled the ball and stayed lying on the field until medical staff came to him with a stretcher and a neck brace. He was lifted onto a cart and showed movement in his arms, hugging his parents and signaling to the crowd with his hand, before being taken off the field.
McCall, who played for Coastal Carolina from 2019-2023, has a history of concussions. During a game against Arkansas State last October, McCall was knocked unconscious and sustained a concussion. He didn’t play another game for Coastal Carolina and transferred to NC State in December.
Prior to Saturday’s injury, McCall completed 3 of 5 passes for 42 yards against Wake Forest.
CJ Bailey, a freshman who started NC State’s previous two games against Clemson and Northern Illinois while McCall was sidelined with an undisclosed injury, took over at QB following McCall’s departure. Entering the matchup against Wake Forest, Bailey had accumulated 469 yards on 42-of-65 passing with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He led the Wolf Pack to a touchdown on his second drive of Saturday’s game.
