Newcastle United are close to securing the future of winger Anthony Gordon by signing the 23-year-old to a new long-term contract.
The Athletic revealed in August that Newcastle were preparing to open discussions.
Though a full agreement has not yet been reached, all parties are confident that the deal will be signed with the broad terms having been agreed upon.
Having developed his game significantly over the last 18 months, the new contract is seen to better reflect his true value and will make him one of Newcastle’s highest-earning players.
The news comes after a complicated summer for Gordon, having been a member of the England squad at the European Championship but only playing a handful of minutes.
At the same time, Newcastle opened discussions with Liverpool over a potential last-resort deal for Gordon if they could not solve their own issues with complying with the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules.
Though they solved that problem by selling Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion respectively, Gordon would have been open to the prospect of moving to the club he grew up supporting.
Gordon’s new contract subsequently became a priority — for the club, there was a desire to both retain their key attacking talent and reaffirm their commitment to the player. Signing him to a long-term deal also ensures Gordon’s value if a sale does come in future windows.
Speaking on Friday morning ahead of Newcastle’s game against Manchester City, head coach Eddie Howe touched on the ongoing negotiations.
“We love Anthony, we’d love him to commit his future to us, and to continue his excellent start to his career here,” he said. “He’s been magnificent for us and we have to help him get back to his best levels. If that means that he signs a new contract and is happy and settled, then I’m all for that.”
After joining Newcastle from Everton in January 2023, Gordon won the Golden Ball at the Under-21 Euros later that year and has since made his senior England debut. He was named Newcastle’s player of the season in 2023-24 after registering 12 goals and 11 assists across all competitions.
This season, Gordon has scored once in six games for Newcastle.
