Appalachian State fires Shawn Clark after first losing season since 2013: Source

Appalachian State has fired coach Shawn Clark, two days after a loss to Georgia Southern dropped the Mountaineers to 5-6, a person briefed on the decision confirmed.

Clark went 40-24 in five seasons, including a 19-7 record in his first two full seasons after taking over for the departing Eliah Drinkwitz. But Clark went 20-17 over the last three years and never won the Sun Belt during his tenure. The Mountaineers also missed a bowl game in two of the past three seasons. Their 5-6 record in 2024 was their first losing season since going 4-8 in 2013, their final season at the Football Championship Subdivision level.

Appalachian State had won four consecutive Sun Belt titles before elevating Clark to the job. Clark played at the school from 1994 to 1998 and coached there since 2016.
