Aston Villa defender Pau Torres has withdrawn from the Spain squad for their upcoming Nations League games against Denmark and Switzerland.
The Spanish FA (RFEF) says Torres arrived at their camp with muscular discomfort following his participation in Villa’s Premier League defeat by Liverpool on Saturday.
The 27-year-old centre-back did receive treatment on the pitch at one stage during the second half of the clash at Anfield, but completed the rest of the game following the issue.
The RFEF added that, after testing, it was estimated that Torres would not be fit for the Nations League fixtures and the decision was made for him to withdraw to avoid “running any kind of risk”.
Torres has been a mainstay in Villa’s team this season, starting all 11 of their Premier League matches and three of their four Champions League games.
Villa dropped to ninth in the Premier League following the 2-0 loss at Liverpool but are only a point behind third-placed Chelsea in a congested top half of the table.
After the international break, Villa face Crystal Palace and Chelsea in the league either side of a Champions League home game against Juventus.
