Buccaneers steamroll Giants in first game without Daniel Jones: Key takeaways

In the first game of the post-Daniel Jones era, the New York Giants and Tommy DeVito lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a 30-7 blowout. The Buccaneers (5-6) snapped a four-game skid, while the Giants (2-9) extended their losing streak to six games.

Tampa Bay faced little resistance from New York’s defense, scoring 30 unanswered points to take a 23-0 halftime lead. All four of the Bucs’ touchdown drives spanned at least 70 yards. Mike Evans led the Bucs in receiving yards in his first game back from a hamstring injury.

The Giants’ offensive problems weren’t solved with a quarterback change. DeVito took four sacks and nine hits on the afternoon, and on the Giants’ first trip into the red zone of the afternoon, rookie running back Tyrone Tracy lost a fumble on first-and-goal to commit the Giants’ seventh red zone turnover of the season.

No effort from New York

The Giants were shut out for three quarters before they finally got on the board with a Devin Singletary score. It was a continuation of their performance all season as the team came into Sunday scoring a league-worst 15.6 points a game. New York was especially lifeless in the first half, tallying 45 yards with 39 coming from just two plays. The team didn’t target wide receiver Malik Nabers until the second half, when DeVito went to him on the first three passes of the second half.

Tracy struggled as well, fumbling in the red zone when the Giants finally got a drive going. It was his third fumble in the last two games. DeVito finished 21-for-31 for 189 yards in his season debut. — Charlotte Carroll, New York Giants beat writer

Mayfield had a field day

Mayfield toyed with the Giants, completing 24-of-30 passes for 294 yards. Mayfield added 29 yards on four carries, including a 10-yard scramble for a touchdown. Mayfield hurdled Giants cornerback Cor’Dale Flott at the goal line to reach the end zone. He then popped up and emphatically mocked DeVito’s touchdown celebration. Mayfield was all over the field. He alertly dove on a fumble deep in the red zone in the second quarter and was downfield lead-blocking on a 56-yard run by rookie running back Bucky Irving in the fourth quarter.

Mayfield’s connection with Evans picked up where it left off, as they connected five times for 68 yards in Evans’ return from a hamstring injury. The win snapped a four-game losing steak for the Bucs, who have a chance to go on a run against a soft schedule to close the season. Tampa Bay plays just one team with a winning record (the Los Angeles Chargers) in their final six games and sit a game behind the Atlanta Falcons for the NFC South divisional lead. — Dan Duggan, New York Giants beat writer

Thibodeaux returns, Ojulari out

Kayvon Thibodeaux returned to action for the first time since missing the last five games with a broken hand. Complicating Thibodeaux’s return was that OLB Azeez Ojulari exited early with a toe injury and did not return. The Giants pass rush impact was limited and they didn’t record a sack. They’ve had just one in the past three games. — Carroll
