EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert underwent an MRI on his injured ankle Monday that showed he is “progressing,” coach Jim Harbaugh said Wednesday.
Herbert suffered a high ankle sprain against the Carolina Panthers in Week 2 but finished that game. He started against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 3 and aggravated the injury in the third quarter. He was pulled from the game after the injury and did not return.
Herbert was in a walking boot after the game. Harbaugh said Wednesday that Herbert is now out of the walking boot. Harbaugh said Herbert “may do some things, may throw the ball a little bit” in Wednesday afternoon’s practice.
Taylor Heinicke replaced Herbert on Sunday against the Steelers. The Chargers also have Easton Stick on the roster.
“We have the other quarterbacks, and we anticipate that they’ll get most of the reps today in practice,” Harbaugh said Wednesday. “But good news. He’s progressing.”
The Chargers are dealing with injuries to other key players ahead of their home game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Left tackle Rashawn Slater is dealing with a strained pectoral, according to Harbaugh. Edge rusher Joey Bosa aggravated a hip injury. Right tackle Joe Alt is dealing with a knee injury, Harbaugh said. Alt is dealing with a sprained MCL in his right knee, according to multiple reports. Alt was hit in his right leg by Steelers defensive tackle Cameron Heyward on the final offensive play Sunday.
When asked Wednesday if Alt has a sprained MCL, Harbaugh said, “I don’t have a comment on the degree or the terminology.”
Slater, Alt and Bosa are not expected to practice Wednesday, Harbaugh said.
