Wolves boss Gary O’Neil says he is ready to let results determine his future and insists he has “zero concerns” about the possibility of the sack.
Some fans again turned on the Molineux head coach during Saturday’s 4-2 home defeat by his former club, Bournemouth, with his side 18th in the Premier League table with two wins from their opening 13 games.
“I don’t know whether you guys (journalists) believe me because I do seem to be asked in every press conference, but I have zero concerns about my role and my future as a coach,” said O’Neil in response to a question about whether he has received assurances from his bosses about his job.
“I understand the journey that I’m on and I know how hard I work. I know every small detail of the situation that we’re dealing with at the football club, which I’ve been dealing with for the last 15 months and I’m really comfortable with the work that I do.
“Do I need and want results to improve? Of course. But there are a lot of factors at play and I am very comfortable with my own situation and I don’t need it to be discussed. I understand how the game works and that results will decide how long I stay at Wolverhampton Wanderers and I’m comfortable with that.
“I accept the consequences of every decision that I make. I accept responsibility for everything that goes on at the football club and at this moment we haven’t quite managed to get to the level that we would want.
“We’re probably not too far away from it. If we manage to add some good results quickly — another six points like we were able to add in quick succession recently — the table looks very different and the situation looks very different.”
Wolves won back-to-back games before Saturday’s defeat but some poor defending contributed to a chastening defeat to Bournemouth.
But O’Neil insisted his squad will not overreact to the weekend’s setback ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Everton.
“In the playing group we don’t react as extremely to results as some people on the outside,” he said.
“I bumped into a few people after Fulham that started talking to me about the European charge! And then I bumped into a few people after Bournemouth saying ‘what a huge setback’. We lost the game of football against a good football side. We didn’t want to lose it, but we did and now we have to respond at Everton.
“So we try to keep it level here and of course, we understand that we need to improve our position on the table.”
