Georgia quarterback Carson Beck was ruled out of the SEC championship against Texas on Saturday after taking a hard hit on the final play of the first half, per the ESPN broadcast. Backup Gunner Stockton replaced him.
Texas edge rusher Trey Moore hit Beck’s throwing arm as he attempted a pass, earning a sack. Beck fumbled on the play and after an attempted return full of laterals, Georgia’s athletic trainers were called onto the field to attend to Beck at midfield as the rest of the team went into the locker room. Beck remained on the field for a few moments before getting to his feet and following his team into the locker room, favoring the right arm.
“He just said his hand got hit as he was throwing it there,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart told ESPN at halftime. “Guy came all the way around the edge, which people do in that situation. He’s got to be aware and just get rid of the ball.”
Beck also serves as Georgia’s holder on the field-goal team.
Beck completed 7-of-13 passes for 56 yards in the first half. He lost 15 yards on the ground.
Stockton, a redshirt sophomore, attempted just 16 passes this season before Saturday.
No. 2 Texas led No. 5 Georgia 6-3 at half, marking the first time in the 33-year history of the SEC championship that neither team scored a touchdown in the first half.
