New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito said he plans on playing in Thursday’s Thanksgiving Day matchup against the Dallas Cowboys despite dealing with a sore throwing forearm.
Giants coach Brian Daboll said earlier on Tuesday that DeVito would be limited in the walk-through practice with the injury but was “hopeful” the second-year quarterback would be able to play in the team’s Week 13 matchup.
“He was sore from the game naturally playing, but it just bothered him a little bit,” Daboll said. “And right before I got out here, we were talking about it, and I was talking to the trainers about it.”
Daboll added that backup Drew Lock would receive reps in practice as well “but if Tommy’s good, then Tommy would be the guy.”
DeVito made his first start of the season Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after the Giants benched and released starting quarterback Daniel Jones.
DeVito completed 21 of 31 passes for 189 yards in the 30-7 loss to the Buccaneers.
The former Illinois standout started six games and played in three more as a rookie in 2023. He threw for 1,101 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions in those games.
More questions ahead of Thursday’s game vs. Cowboys
It’s been a crazy week and a half for the Giants QB room and DeVito’s sore throwing arm is just the latest twist in the saga. Once Jones was benched, the Giants turned to DeVito over backup Lock. Jones went through the motions of the week as the team’s fourth stringer before asking for his release on Friday, which was granted. But Sunday’s offensive showing was a team effort disaster as the Giants went scoreless for three quarters before losing 30-7. DeVito finished 21 for 31 for 189 yards. DeVito exited for a snap with Lock coming in.
Now there are more questions for Thursday despite DeVito saying he plans to play. DeVito also said his entire body is sore after taking some big hits throughout Sunday. Daboll said he was “hopeful, but it’s not 100 percent” for DeVito’s chances. That led to Lock taking “more than zero” first-team reps in Tuesday’s walk through. — Charlotte Carroll, Giants beat writer
