Juan Soto says he wants to help Mets 'grow a dynasty' at introductory news conference

NEW YORK — On a momentous day in franchise history, the New York Mets were not shy about their ambitions.

“To try to grow a dynasty is one of the most important things,” Juan Soto said at his introductory news conference with the Mets on Thursday.

“He asked me how many (championships) in the next 10 years, and I said I’d like to win two to four,” owner Steve Cohen said.

“We’re the New York Mets. We’re going after championships,” manager Carlos Mendoza said. “A dynasty — that’s what we’re trying to build.”

That is bold talk for a franchise that owns two titles in 63 seasons — the last of them coming in 1986, before any player currently on their roster was born.

Back when he was first introduced as owner, Cohen said he’d be disappointed if the Mets didn’t win a title in his first three to five seasons as owner.

In the time since, he’s walked back that remark, saying he wishes he hadn’t put it that way. Next season will be Cohen’s fifth as an owner, with the Mets making the postseason twice in the first four. Last year’s trip to the NLCS was New York’s first advancement in the postseason since 2015.

This is a developing story, more to come.
