Justin Herbert ruled out of Wednesday's practice with ankle injury, leg contusion

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert did not practice Wednesday afternoon. Herbert was listed with ankle and thigh injuries on the team’s injury report.

Herbert is currently dealing with a left ankle injury in addition to a leg contusion suffered during  Sunday night’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Herbert missed one snap following the leg contusion, finishing 21-for-30 for 213 yards and a touchdown.

Herbert suffered the ankle injury during a scramble up the middle in the first half. The ankle injury is separate from the high ankle sprain suffered earlier this year.

“Got them both covered,” Herbert quipped.

He added that the ankle injury is not as severe as the sprain and that the leg contusion is “not as concerning” as the ankle. Herbert has been wearing a sleeve on his left leg for the last few weeks to help deal with wear-and-tear swelling in his knee, which is separate from the contusion.

“I’d like to give him some rest, but you know Justin,” said Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh on Wednesday. “I don’t control him. Sometimes he looks at me and he goes out there and a lot of times it’s good for him. He’s one of those type of guys where football is the treatment, is the medicine, and I get that.”

Taylor Heinicke took the team’s first-team offensive reps. Heinicke last started for the Atlanta Falcons in 2023, finishing 1-3 across four starts while throwing five touchdowns and four interceptions on 54.4 percent completion percentage.

The news comes as Herbert and the Chargers are trying to return to the playoffs after finishing last in the AFC West in 2023. Before the 19-17 loss to Kansas City, Los Angeles had won five of their last six games.
